David A. Cook was founder and chair of the Film Studies Department at Emory University, where he taught for 34 years before coming to UNCG in 2007.  He is the author of A History of Narrative Film (W. W. Norton, 1981; 1990; 1996; 2004; 2016), Lost Illusions: American Cinema in the Shadow of Watergate and Vietnam, 1970-1979, Volume 9 in the History of American Cinema Series (Scribner’s, 2000; University of California Press, 2002), and A History of Three-Dimensional Cinema (Anthem Press, 2021).  He is also the author of the “Motion Pictures: History” entry in the Macropedia edition of The Encyclopedia Britannica and of numerous scholarly articles on literature, film history, and film theory.

At UNCG, Dr. Cook teaches courses in film history and auteur studies of directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, and Sam Peckinpah.  He holds a Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Virginia (1971).
