The “Alphabet Soup” 48-Hour Film Festival served as a high-intensity crucible for creativity, challenging student filmmakers to translate abstract concepts into cinematic reality under grueling time constraints. The 2026 iteration of the festival was a success, testing not only the artistic resolve of our participants but also their adaptability in the face of unexpected technical hurdles.

The premise of “Alphabet Soup” is both simple and daunting: filmmakers are given exactly 48 hours to deliver a finished short film incorporating mandatory elements. This year’s required prop was a doorknob, and the submissions showcased impressive efforts to achieve a professional aesthetic despite the abbreviated timeline. The creative themes this year leaned heavily into “community engagement,” reflecting a deep connection between the filmmakers and their surroundings.

We are proud to announce this year’s winners:

  • 1st Place: Leave the Door Open by Andrea Carlota and Eileen Gulley-Ryan
  • 2nd Place: The Threshold by Ezekiel Pridgen

In an exciting step forward for the festival’s reach, the entire event was livestreamed by Spartan Media Productions. For those who missed the live broadcast or wish to revisit the films, the full recording is available on the Media Studies Department’s YouTube channel: youtube.com/@mstuncg.

The 2026 Alphabet Soup Film Festival was more than a competition; it was a powerful demonstration of cultural fluency and technical proficiency. As we look toward the next cycle, the unified creative vision displayed by these students will undoubtedly serve them well in their future careers across the global media landscape.
